i am having problems setting up a clearance price column. can i use symbols besides numbers such as + to show 12+4 (buy 12 get 4 free).

The Clearance Price field only allows for prices. If you want to specify that this item has an offer assigned to it then you will want to enter the text into a user field and display this user field on the product.
